Summary: Cheap plastic construction and the worst support experience ever
Comment: I made the mistake of purchasing this product despite other complaints about support and software quality issues. I figured I could just avoid calling support and use the "basic" version of the drivers. My HP Officejet 6100 was getting long in the teeth and I really needed a printer with ethernet connectivity so that I can shut down my PC and have my girlfriend still be able to print from her iMac.

The L7680 is attractive from a features point-of-view. The duplex printing is what sold me. Ironically however, I think the duplexer is the point of failure that resulted in me getting a printer that refused to acknowledge there being any paper in the tray. I powered it on for the first time, waited for the display to prompt me to add paper, added the paper and clicked OK, and got... "Insert paper and press OK." Rinse and repeat, no matter what I tried it refused to acknowledge that there was paper in the tray.

My general impression of this printer is that it's cheap, molded-plastic garbage, and so it's not surprising that it would come from the factory with mechanical defaults. But I stupidly decided I would give tech support a chance before returning it to the store. I really wanted this printer to work.

After 15 minutes on hold, I got someone who was reasonably friendly but clearly couldn't hear or understand me. I had to spell my name at least 5 times and repeat the serial number over and over. And then I got transferred, which meant another 15 minutes on hold.

The second agent was reading from a script that didn't address my problem. After walking through driver installation (and re-installation!!!), cleaning the ADF with a damp cloth, resetting the NVRAM, etc, he just started repeating previous "solutions". It was a total, complete waste of time. I felt like I was talking to someone who had never seen the product they were supposedly "supporting." It wasn't just language and idiom issues (although English was clearly not his first language) - it was a complete ignorance about the product. For instance, if the device doesn't pass its initial power-on self test when not even connected to the computer, why the hell would you make me install (and then uninstall/reinstall) the drivers?!?

At the two hour mark, he had clearly exhausted his flow chart so he started repeating random things that he had already asked me to try... at which point I gave up and decided to return this piece of junk. Good riddance. I will never purchase another HP product again.

Summary: Solid Performance, not very pretty
Comment: My 7680 has been in service and has performed flawlessly (as fax, copier, and scanner) for almost 12-months. Not as pretty as some of the competition, but a solid performer. Great color copies.

Summary: A great printer with a great feature set that works well in OS X and Windows XP
Comment: After reading the mostly negative reviews of this printer, I decided to buy it anyway. The specs looked great and I don't seem to have the problems with electronics that many other people commonly complain of. Turns out, this printer is no different. I have not had any "deal breaker" problems and I think it is a fantastic unit.

Pro's: Fast, good looking prints. Text is crisp and photo's on photo paper look fantastic. Time will tell, but it looks as if this machine is going to save me a ton of money on ink compared to my last HP inkjet. Built in networking and print server. A new awesome feature called Direct Digital Filing that allows you to scan directly to a network folder. Fast installation of the HP software.

Con's: A little noisier than my last HP AIO inkjet and it is large but not any bigger than my last unit. The Direct Digital Filing was difficult to figure out but I will explain below.

Installation:
I installed the printer on my 3 ½ year old Intel iMac running OS X 10.5.6 and a basic installation of Windows XP running via Parallels. This printer is replacing a 4 yr old HP 7410 that I am only replacing because my printing needs have greatly increased and it was beginning to get expensive due to the ink costs. After reading the manual (5 minutes), I carefully unpacked the printer and put it together (10 minutes). I turned on the power and let it go through its start up routine. The manual says this may take 12 minutes and it does. Just let it do its thing. I had also previously download the most current software and drivers from the HP website. Never used the included discs.

OS X: After the start up routine, I plugged in the Ethernet cable and opened the Print & Fax panel. The computer found and connected to the printer via Bonjour and I printed my first page within 2 minutes. Next I installed the full HP software and driver package for OS X. It took 6 minutes to install and then I had full access to all the more advanced features of the printer. I opened the printer server and set up my fax speed dials and they exported immediately to the printer. Tested print, fax, copy and scan and all worked great. I also played around with the ADF and tested 2 sided copy, scan and fax. All seemed to work well. No jams. ADF took in only one page at a time. I was also able to wirelessly print to this printer via my Macbook by going to the Print & Fax panel on the Macbook and adding the printer via Bonjour. I did not need to install any software or drivers on the laptop to get it printing. (I had already enabled Printer Sharing on the iMac).

Windows XP: I have a standard retail install of Windows XP with all services packs and updates installed. I downloaded the basic printer and driver package from HP and installed this instead of the advanced because I do not use Windows for much at all. I forgot to time the exact length of the install but it definitely took less than 10 minutes and basic print was up and running just fine. If you have a run of the mill PC that came with all sorts of unnecessary bloatware (non of which is tested to be compatible with HP's printer and software) then I would expect you to have all sorts of problems. There is absolutely no way to know how all that extra software affects your system. Remember also that standard Windows software installation procedures require you to install the software BEFORE connecting the USB cable and to disable any firewalls or antivirus software before proceeding. I imagine failure to do these things causes lots of problems for people as well.

Windows Vista: If you are running a machine with Windows Vista and are trying to get it to do anything useful at all, well, you have only yourself to blame.

Direct Digital Filing: This was quite a chore to get up and running. The instructions are very poor and in fact useless. I could not get this feature to work using the included instructions. It is set up using the embedded print server. You are supposed to input the network path to the folder that you want to scan to along with the user name and password for the computer that folder resides on. I did not call customer care and would not even consider doing so. It is only a waste of your time and energy to call an India based service center. I instead used Google. It looked as if some had luck with using the computers IP address instead of the computer name in the folder path.

In OS X, I had to go into System Preferences>Sharing>File Sharing>Options and then select "Share files and folders using SMB". After that, I went to the print server and input the folder path in the following format:
\\11.0.1.199\Smith\Bill's Documents\Invoice
Where:
11.0.1.199 = the IP address of my computer (Google to find out how to find that)
Smith = The name of the Home folder
Bill's Documents = The name of the next folder in the Home folder
Invoice = the folder in Bill's Documents in the Home folder that you want to scan to.
Next, you need to type in the User Name and Password for you computer. This is the info that pops up any time you need to install new software or do a software update. I was not able to choose a folder that was located any further down into the folder path than two folders down from the Home folder. The print server would not allow me to type enough text to dig any further down. So I moved the folders that I wanted to use up to a level that I could input into the print server. This is rather inconvenient and doesn't make any sense. You should be able to assign any folder you want no matter where it is located. I may need to investigate the matter further to see if I can fix the problem.

In Windows, I think I first ran some sort of Network Setup Wizard so that I could enable file and print sharing over the network. Once I was done with that, I decided that I would share my Desktop and make it the folder that I would scan to in Windows. So I found the Desktop folder under Documents and Setting, right clicked on it, selected Sharing and Security and then gave the Desktop folder the shared name of Shared Desktop. Now I went back to the print server and set up a new speed dial for my Windows scan destination in the following format:
\\11.0.1.198\Shared Desktop
Where:
11.0.1.198 = the IP address of the Windows computer running under Parallels
Shared Desktop = the folder that I want things scanned to
I did not need to put in a User Name or Password for my Windows scan destination because I do not have a user name or password. There is only one account on the Windows machine. So I left those entries blank. If you have a user name and password, I would imagine that you would need to input tem. It appears that under Windows, you may be able to scan to any folder you want no matter how far down the folder path it is so long as you have shared it properly. I am not going to test it because I wont use it in Windows.

I gave this printer 4 stars. I deducted a star because of the problems with the Direct Digital Filing setup. It is not explained well in the manual and it really shouldn't be anything that is difficult. They should make it so that all you have to do is "drag" the folder you want to use onto the setup screen to tell it which folder to scan to or at least give you a window that allows you to navigate to the folder you want and select it. Setting up this function is a real pain in the A$$. But if you are able to figure it out and get it set up, I think it is a feature that you will really like. Overall I think this is an excellent printer with some really neat features. It is even better considering that it can be had for under $280 if you search around. I will try and report back after a few months of usage to see how things are going.

Summary: HP Officejet Pro L7680
Comment: I have had this product for about 6 months and use it to print church bulletins and flyers primarily. This is the third HP Officejet product that we have purchased and this appears to be the worst of the three that we have owned. Unit is attached via network connection and response is slow. Unit's address seem to change quite often and there are long periods between jobs. Unit prints fast in draft mode and the colors are good. I probably will not buy another model of the HP officejet series.

Summary: Not compatible with Windows Vista
Comment: This printer worked great when I bought it and was running Windows XP. I upgraded to Windows Vista and the printer will no longer scan documents and frequently only prints the top half of pages. HP support is useless - many of their troubleshooting solutions refer only to Windows XP and earlier versions. The available Vista drivers have no effect on the funtion. A review of on-line forums indicates many users have this same problem. If you have Vista, stay away from this printer.
