Summary: Motorola H500 Bluetooth Headset in Steel Teal Blue
Comment: Bluetooth cell phone headsets are really a subjective choice, and the color of the headset is only one consideration.

Some people love them and others hate them. Some models seem to fit one person's ear (and lifestyle) better than another. That being said, this reviewer will try to offer an (overdue) opinion on what has turned out to be a pretty good choice in a well-made Bluetooth cell phone headset.

When I first looked at the Motorola H500, it's price tag was in the $100 range, so it was easy to pass on in favor of wired headsets. But with the recent price drops, this unit is not only worth considering, it's now even lower priced than some of the better wired units that were former favorites. Considering that so many states and localities have laws against cell phone use while driving, this can be an excellent communication tool if used carefully and safely.

There are many brands and model out there to choose from, but the Motorola H500 is well worth consideration, especially in light of its excellent pricing. Once adjusted and positioned correctly to the ear, its overall sound quality has turned out to be excellent. Had held off on making a decision between brands and models mostly because I wear glasses, but after a bit of retail store test driving for fit and sound, found (like other reviewers) that this headset seems to settle easily to my ear and just seems to fit properly.

One way of looking at how well a Bluetooth cell phone headset functions would perhaps be to rate its use during everyday tasks or activities, so here are a few of those, along with my personal findings.

- Driving: excellent, quite functional, 5-stars.
- Walking: excellent, 5-stars.
- Cycling: excellent, low wind noise, 5-stars.
- Running: OK, 4-stars (felt like it might fall off).
- Computing: excellent, 5-stars.
- Sleeping: decent, 4-stars... hey, just joking here!

Don't want to go on a rant about driving while using a cell phone, but if you take the time to read your phone's manual along with the one for the Motorola H500, you'll find that you can use it with voice activated functions, so that you don't need to fool with cell phone dialing when driving. Just program your phone, say your party's name into the Bluetooth device and you'll be automatically connected.

Color selections - something for everyone:

- Motorola H500 Bluetooth Headset - Silver

- Motorola H500 Bluetooth Headset - Black

- Motorola H500 Bluetooth Headset - Pink

- Motorola H500 Bluetooth Headset - Orange

- Motorola H500 Bluetooth Headset - Teal Blue

Pros:
- Overall good sound quality, very little static.
- Comfortable to wear/use, has an ergonomic ear hook.
- Clean, streamlined design.
- Good range, better than some others.
- Bluetooth 1.2 means less interference & faster connections.
- Inexpensive, reasonably priced.
- About 8 hours talk time and 200 hours standby time on a charge.

Cons:
- Ringtone alerts, but that's a personal thing.
- Small volume controls.

Is this Motorola headset the newest, latest and greatest? Nope. If you want that, check out the new Jawbone II Bluetooth Headset by Aliph, but then check out the price on that unit and compare the features.

Summary:
The Motorola H500 is an inexpensive Bluetooth cell phone headsets, offering good sound quality, nice ergonomics, and better-than-average range. It's an excellent communication device, adding to driving safety if used carefully. If you're looking for a good Bluetooth headset at a reasonable price, it's well worth considering... whichever color you pick.

Update:
For those who privately asked, my H500 didn't come in a box. It came in a ziplock-style bag that was marked "bulk" on the label. It contained the H500 headset, AC charger, user guides and a "Motomanual." From all appearances it was brand new.

Comment: I love it. I have had several including the new one that goes around the back of your head. It cost 85 dollars at the sprint store so I thought it was top of the line. It sucked when you tried to drive and talk it would pick up all the outside noise. This one is great people hear me clearly and it doesn't sound like you are in a tunnel. I hear well with it and I put everything on super loud including my TV so I was surprised when I could hear so well with this one. Also the fit is perfect and it is so light you forget you have it on. It doesn't make your ear hot or irritated like other ones do. I recommend it to everyone don't let the cheap price fool you. The less controls the better for me.

Summary: Does the job in a pinch.
Comment: This product is okay, and works well enough. I had to get one fast due to the California law taking place on July 1, 2008. However, I will continue to look for a better product. I don't like the fact that the same button is use to turn the device off and on as well as to redial the last number. I have redialed people when I was trying to turn the thing off.

Summary: Didn't expect to love it but I do! Crystal clear sound!
Comment: I bought this to comply with California's handsfree law. I made sure to purchase from Amazon directly because they guarantee that the product is made by Motorola and is not a cheap imitation. Be careful that your seller is Amazon and not another vendor selling through Amazon if you want this guarantee. I saw on the Motorola website that they have had significant problems with this model being copied and I decided to pay a few dollars extra to make sure I bought the real thing from a reputable vendor.

I use this with my Sony Ericsson W580i (which I love). Set up was extremely easy, they recognized each other instantly. The sound quality in the headset is crystal clear. I keep the phone in the car console beside me and the sound in my ear is loud and clear. Everyone I've talked to said they could not tell I was using a headset. I have been using this headset for 3 weeks and I have NEVER heard any static. I believe that the bad reviews are probably due to people who bought fake Motorola headsets. They could not possibly be talking about the same headset that I've been using. When I first started using it I pushed the button when the headset was in my hand and I was sometimes confused about what it was doing, however, I have learned that it's best to push the button when it's on my head because the confirmation tones let me know exactly what it's doing. I was worried that it has only one function button(not including the volume buttons) but that hasn't been a problem. It uses smart context logic and, along with the confirmation tones, one button seems to work fine.

I wear glasses and have found that if I rotate the headset a little clockwise and counter-clockwise as I'm putting it on, it always nestles into a good spot and cohabitates with my glasses just fine. The ear piece clamps down on my ear just right and feels pretty snug. If I move my head a lot it does flop around a little but it would take a lot of activity for it to fall off because it's gripping around my ear pretty securely. I really didn't want something actually sticking into my ear like earplugs. I love how this has a tiny speaker that is held just next to my ear without actually going in my ear.

I set up my phone to use voice calling and recorded the commands using the headset. It was easy to do and works great! Now I can press a button on my phone, then say the name I want to call, the phone plays back my original recording (of what it thinks I said) as it places the call. I hear all of this happening through the headset.

The only thing I don't like about the headset is that I don't seem to be able to change the ringtone. It has a gentle, short, classical music tone when there is an incoming call but I can also hear the ringtone from my phone so I do know who is calling. One short button press on the headset and I'm talking to my caller.

In summary, this headset has amazing clarity and is easy to use. I'm glad I didn't pay for a more expensive headset - I don't feel like I'm missing anything.

Editorial Reviews:

For users who demand superior performance and good value, the H500 offers the best of both because of longer talk times with a more stylish, compact and comfortable design all at a reasonable price. This headset is both discreet and stylish, yet highly functional. The overall compact size and lightweight of this headset allows for easy storage when not in use. Also, the lengthy talk and standby times include up to 8 hours of talk time or 200 hours of standby time from a single full charge (travel charger included). The multifunction button allows you to place, receive or end calls, all with the push of a button. With Bluetooth® wireless technology, devices work together up to 10 meters (30 feet) away. Consider pairing it with your Bluetooth® enabled PC for hands-fee Voice Over IP use. An adjustable earhook allows the headset to be worn on either the left or right ear. You can also easily adjust the volume and mute your call from the headset. Motorola wireless accessories are compatible with any Bluetooth 1.2 enabled mobile phone or device.
