Customer Rating: Summary: Consistently works, then consistently fails Comment: I've just finished with the second of these that I've owned. It's true that while they work, they work really well. But after about a year, the ultrasonic membrane stops working, even with proper maintenance. This is a non-repairable part, so that's it. The first time, I took it back to Bed, Bath & Beyond and they exchanged it, but now it's failed again, same fault, same timeframe, and I really would rather have something more reliable. The recent poster's remarks about their customer service are also true.
Customer Rating: Summary: Better than average humidifier Comment: Last year I purchased a Bionaire after my old Bionaire humidifier died. I had to return it after a month since the cleaning light came on and wouldn't go off despite repeated cleanings. So, I traded it in for a much more expensive Air O Swiss. It worked beautifully for a month until we retired it for the summer. This fall I cleaned it, replaced the beads and the silver stick and fired it up. It consistently comes on and it resets beautifully after cleaning, Right there that seems to be better than average. However, I have noticed TONS of white dust comes out of it despite new little beads in the cartridge and a new silver stick. I didn't notice it so much last year. I've changed the beads and the stick again after 2 months and the white dust is still accumulating.
Pros: Tank holds 2 nights worth of water set at 40% humidity. Easy to clean and fill. Works consistently. Is pretty quiet. Doesn't seem to bother my allergies or asthma.
Cons: Poor aesthetics (ugly), lots of white dust, and expensive to maintain.
Customer Rating: Summary: significant design flaw Comment: The AOS 7142 has the potential of being an excellent room humidifier but it has a major design flaw which will render it useless for many people.
As you know, if you live in a cold climate, you need to control home humidity levels. Too much humidity will cause condensation on windows and in walls. I purchased this unit mainly for the built in hygrometer. Which, as it turns out, does not work at all. In fact, the hygrometer is more like a random number generator. I have returned 2 units and am on my third (and last). In the first unit, the hygrometer varied wildly in short periods. It would jump from 30% to 65% and back to 30% within seconds in a stable room while my external hygrometer I used as a reference did not budge. This wide fluctuation caused the unit to cycle on and off constantly. Second unit always read 30% not matter what. Therefore, it stayed on all the time. My room humidity got to 65% (too much for cold winter night) and the AOS hygrometer just kept on measuring 30%. Third unit measures humidity levels at least 20% less than actual. The lowest settable target humidity level on the unit is 40% so, with the 20% inaccuracy, the minimum humidity level I can get in my room is 60% which is higher than I want/need.
The unit has some very positive features such as (1) very quiet (2) no white dust (I don't have hard water). It is ridiculous that the manufacturer would put such a cheap hygrometer into such an expensive unit. Had they spent a few extra pennies, they would have had an excellent product.
If you live in the Mojave desert and you just need a humidifier that will pump out humidity constantly then this is for you. Otherwise, look for a unit with a accurate hygrometer.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not Very Effective Comment: We like the appearance of the unit and the quiet operation. Based on the visable mist, it appears to put out a lot of moisture. However, even when leaving it run all night and most of the day, the humidity in our bedroom doesn't get above 30 percent.
We have fairly hard water so it leaves a layer of white dust over everything. We have resorted to using distilled water but that gets a little costly; two gallons per day at $1.59 per gallon. That cost is offset a little bit by not having to replace the demineralization cartridge.
If you need to humidify a room that is larger than the average bedroom, you should consider buying a larger unit with a much greater output.
Customer Rating: Summary: a good ultrasonic Comment: First off, this unit does not have a 3.5 gallon capacity. Its really
just shy of a 2 gallon capacity (perhaps 2 full gallons if you removed
the filter cartridge that sticks into the water tank).
This unit puts out a good volume of mist at a high rate and does it
quietly. It's about twice as fast as my other (older) unit and
quieter to boot. The nozzle can spray in two directions, which
I find helps distribute the mist into the air better.
I don't use this with hard water -- if you plan on using hard water
I just wouldn't use an ultrasonic humidifier, get one of the wicking
humidifiers.
The water reservoir has a sturdy handle that is nice for carrying
when its full. However, a couple negatives for me are that the
tapering of the reservoir make it look unstable when you're filling
it (haven't had it fall over though). Also, I keep this up on a
dresser, and its hard to put the full reservoir (which is heavy)
back onto the unit. That would be less of an issue if kept on a
table or floor.
Overall, I'm happy with this unit and its been running almost
continuously this winter.

This efficient Air-O-Swiss Ultrasonic humidifiier uses several cutting edge technologies to achieve an optimum quality of environmental control. High-frequency vibrations generate a micro-fine mist, while an Intelligent Temperature Compensation system (ICS) measures humidity relative to the room temperature and automatically adjusts the output to achieve an optimum balance dynamically as conditions change. The water is kept clean with three separate processes that make up the Microbial Protection System: ultrasonic technology, pre-heating, and Ionic Silver Stick. The latter makes use of the proven anti-microbial qualities of Silver, which has proven effective against more than 650 types of bacteria without any chemical additives. When operated with the pre-heating function, the water is heated to 176°F before it enters the nebulizer chamber. The mist exits the appliance at a comfortable temperature of 104°F. This neutralizes the cooling effect of mist to keep the room temperature from falling, and also keeps the water cleaner. A replaceable demineralization cartridge ensures a hygienic, pure water mist, without lime scale or mineral residues. Exchangeable demineralization cartridge / Quiet operation /Easy to clean and handle Suitable for rooms up to 860 sq. ft. Power consumption - 40W w/o pre-heating, 140W w/ pre-heating / Moisture output - up to 3.5 gallons / 24 hrs Water capacity - 2.0 gallons Dimensions - 9.8 x 11.0 x 17.3 Weight - 8.0 lbs.
