Summary: A NEW FEATURE MIXED WITH SOME OLD
Comment: Carrotblanca was a new animated Bugs Bunny short that was released in 1995 theatrically before being packaged on this tape with several older Warner Brothers shorts. Carrotblanca is a send up of Casablanca and while its not bad, it doesn't have the edge of classic warners toons of the 1940's.

"Dripalong Daffy" 1951 - Daffy and buddy Porky enter a lawless Western town where Daffy goes head-to-head with Nasty Canasta.

"Hare do" 1949 - Elmer Fudd chases Bugs into a theater and ends up being the main attraction and the main course for a lion.

"You Ought to be in Pictures" 1940 - As the clock strikes midday, the animators vanish from their desks, abandoning the studio to Porky and Daffy. Jealous of Porky's success in the Looney Tunes cartoon series, Daffy tricks Porky into quitting Looney Tunes and heading for the Warner Brothers lot to go after the big money in a career in live-action features.

"The Scarlet Pumpernickel" 1950 - Daffy "Dumas" Duck has written his own screenplay which parodies The Scarlet Pimpernel and tries to sell it to "J.L.," the studio head.

"Box Office Bunny" - 1991 - A huge cinema is built on top of Bugs home, and as Bugs investigates, Usher Elmer Fudd tries to evict him from the theatre. Meanwhile, Daffy Duck slips into the theatre without paying and- to cover up his own crime.

An uneven collection. None of the older toons can be considered five star classics but they're not the worst either.

Summary: Play It Again Daffy
Comment: The classic Warner Bros. cartoons of the 1940s would frequently host stars from the studio such as Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall and Edward G. Robinson. In that tradition Warner Bros. has created an affectionate parody of "Casablanca" starring Bugs Bunny. Pepe Le'Pew is a perfect substitute for Claude Rains while Daffy Duck fill in at the piano for Dooley Wilson. The picture of the cat in the Ingrid Bergman role giving furtive looks as she walk into Ricks on Sylvester's arm is almost worth the price of the video.

The other cartoons included on the video are a mixed bag. There is a poorly animated account of Daffy Duck sneaking into a movie theater (unlike the title cartoon which meets Warner Bros. highest standards). The video includes a colorized version of a combination live action/cartoon short "You Ought To Be In Pictures" where you can seen the well known but not particularly loved Loony Toons producer Leon Schlesinger.

The other high point of the tape is "The Scarlet Pumpernickel" starring Daffy Duck which will be special fun for anyone who's seen Leslie Howard in the Scarlet Pimpernel.

While Bug Bunny is one of the few stars that can fill the shoes of the Great Bogie, his character was at least partially inspired by a carrot chewing Clark Gable in "It Happened One Night". Isn't it time for Bugs to sweep Scarlet off her feet in "Gone With the Hare"?

Editorial Reviews:

Lights, camera, mayhem! It wouldn't be Hollywood without a big premiere, so the red carpet rolls out for the global video debut of CARROTBLANCA. Bugs Bunny is the world-weary hero who "sticks his cottontail out for no one" in this CASABLANCA spoof bringing together more Warner Bros. animated characters than any other Looney Tunes animated short in history. Next, go West, young fan, as movie duckaroo DRIPALONG DAFFY vows to clean up a one-horse town. (Got a broom, bub?) Two in the balcony is the ticket when the two are "da wabbit" and Elmer Fudd in HARE DO. Then, Daffy dupes Porky into quitting his studio contract by telling him YOU OUGHT TO BE IN PICTURES in this live-action/animation classic. Next, Daffy gets carried away with his over-the-top portrayal of THE SCARLET PUMPERNICKEL. Closing out the fun: a trip (and a fall, plunge, >thwack!< and wild pursuit) to the "multi" multiplex for the boffo BOX OFFICE BUNNY. Down in front!
